How Will My First Meeting Go?
It’s your first meeting and you’ll probably feel nervous, afraid or hesitant, wondering what to expect. You’re not exactly looking forward to being in a room with strangers sharing parts of yourself you don’t like to talk about with anyone else. It’s okay. We understand how you feel, and it will get worse as you get closer to your first meeting, but there’s really nothing to worry about. The minute you walk into a meeting, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and inviting faces.
First, there’ll be introductions. We operate on a first name basis so everyone’s anonymity remains intact. Every week, a Gamblers Anonymous member chairs the meeting, however, as a new member you will not be asked to chair just yet.
You are probably still super nervous at this point, but keep reminding yourself that everyone else is there for the same reason. After the introductions, you’ll be asked to talk about what has brought you to the meeting. Remember that nothing that has been said within the meeting will be repeated beyond that room.
Next, the chairperson will pick someone to give a “therapy”. This involves that person telling you their story about why they came to Gamblers Anonymous. You soon begin to realize everyone else is going through a situation just like yours. By now, you’ll probably be much more relaxed.
You may have a coffee break, after which you’ll return for the last part of the meeting. We advise that you continue to attend the meetings. You won’t know unless you try. Why not try our meetings for 90 days? If they don’t work for you, you can have your misery back free of charge! You’ve got nothing to lose.
